World Academy Students Bring Home “School Certificate of Merit” In 2017 AMC 8 Math Competition

In what is simply a continuation of excellence among the achievements of our students here at World Academy, our World Academy Math Club team is proud to have earned high distinction in this year’s AMC 8 Mathematics Competition.

Taken in mid-November, the AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. Students are tested on their ability to apply classroom-learned skills to problem-solving challenges in a stress-free environment, encouraging positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers.

The World Academy Math Team, started by Math Club Coordinator and Middle School teacher Sri Sankar, meets in the mornings before school from 7:30 to 8:00 three days a week and trains for and competes in a variety of mathematics competitions. World Academy students have consistently placed in high ranks in many of the math competitions, many of which require that students be avid problem solvers and which require the use of logic, creativity, and reasoning skills. This year’s competition results add to a long history of excellence from World Academy students in the AMC 8 competition.

World Academy students ranked in the Top 1% Nationally, the Top 5% Nationally, the Top 25% Nationally, and the Top 50% Nationally, earning Honor Roll, Honor Roll with Distinction, and Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards for their impressive efforts in this year’s AMC 8 competition.

“Through classroom resources and friendly competition, World Academy's math team program strives to strengthen the mathematical capabilities of our students and foster a love for the subject,” said Ms. Sankar, reflecting on the Word Academy team’s impressive showing. “Contests like AMC8 helps us develop the analytical skills that our students need to be successful in their future careers in an innovative society.

In addition to strong showings by individual students, World Academy's Team score ( top 3 scores) adds up to a 58, earning a School Certificate of Merit - a distinction earned by only 625 schools across the country.

“In today’s technology-driven world, it’s our responsibility to be sure our students have a high proficiency in math as a foundation for their future education and long-term success,” explains World Academy’s Head of School, Dr. Lisa Dias. “To see our students succeed speaks to their abilities to assess and respond to complex problems in innovative and intelligent ways. We are immensely proud of these students’ performances.”
