“Fortunately, music is in the unique position in that it encompasses so much of what we learn inside and outside of the classroom. Music is a science, math, history, foreign language, and physical activity. It is all of these things, but additionally, music is emotion. It takes all these different methodical and difficult techniques and utilizes them to create something that is an unexplainable manifestation which is uniquely human.
Music speaks to all people in all different ways. It creates a bridge spanning across cultures and time. It also gives us the ability to progress past differences. Music requires unison and harmony but can also give us an experience that is uniquely ours. Music makes us human. In this way, music is similar to people with many opportunities for individuality and style.
Being in the unique position to teach such a subject, I intend to explore a wide range of methods in my classroom to reach all students from all different levels and abilities. People learn in several fashions: kinesthetically, aurally, visually, verbally, and any other number of ways. Music incorporates all these learning styles and I intend to utilize each one of them so that every child has an equal opportunity to learn.”
